Mexico City’s Paurro is the next artist to release on marginalized gender focused label SOS Music. Having been quickly recognised and taken on by the Discwoman collective, Paurro has been making a noise in the electronic world with RA, Mixmag and DJ Mag all singing her praises, as well as being resident at Mexico City’s YuYu Club & Funk Club.
With Onna-Bugeisha being her biggest EP yet, you can understand through listening to each track that she’s really thought carefully about the ideas and themes around the release, resulting in a beautifully eclectic package of five solid, interesting and unique bodies of work.
In reflection to the unsettling femicide rate in Mexico which has been causing political stir in the country, Paurro wanted to explore themes around female warriors and forgotten women. The EP title is a term referring to female samurai warriors that existed in pre-modern Japan, whose legacy was ultimately erased from history because of their gender, in response the tracks are in ode to those forgotten women, each in their different way.
‘Throughout this whole EP what I did is play around more with textures and percussion, I focused more on the details and smaller sounds that you might not hear straight away but that make a song really amazing. I feel that’s what ‘Onna-Bugeisha’ is all over’ – says Paurro
Sonically each track embodies and unfolds its own story, the EP starts with its longest track, the 9 minute long ‘Jingū Kogo / Emperatriz Jingū’ which delves the listener directly into the thick of an ancient jungle, with a long sexy percussive build up amidst sounds of birds and wildcats.
Following nicely is the aptly titled track ‘Ninja’, which offers sounds of sharp and neat high hats, very clean breaks meshed with chopped up vocals, harps and a minimalist structure. Pre-single 1 titled ‘Naginata / Sable’ is another highlight of the EP, which sits quite differently to the rest of the works, offering a more psychedelic, dark and raw energy.
